Soil Sustainability 1.0 - Back to the Basics

Agricultural sustainability is the ability of a system to maintain stable levels of production and quality in the long term without compromising economic profitability or the environment. The conservation of soil quality is fundamental to agricultural sustainability. Whether you are familiar with current sustainability practices or not, this back to the basics program will help you in your farming operation.

This non-credit program will discuss the concept of Sustainable Ag and why it is important to:

  • Satisfy human food and fiber needs.
  • Enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agricultural economy depends.
  • Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls.
  • Sustain the economic viability of farm operations.
  • Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society.

Soil basics will be discussed including:

  • Soil structure
  • Minerals
  • Organic matter
  • Humus
  • Living Organisms
  • Nutrients
  • Tips on Soil Testing
