Research Funding Options

Scholarships are available through USI to help fund study abroad programs. Additional scholarships are offered through other local, regional, national and international organizations, as well as through various study abroad organizations.

Center for International Programs Scholarships

USI Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship 

  • Open to all USI students who have been accepted in a USI study abroad program and will receive USI credit during the program.
  • Recipients must enroll in USI during the fall or spring semester following their study abroad program and complete the study abroad ambassador projects outlined in their application within 6 months.


Global Engagement Scholarship 

  • Open to all USI students who have been accepted in a USI study abroad program and will receive USI credit during the program.
  • Ability to engage in a Global Engagement project during the term abroad; projects will be judged on feasibility and relevance, as well as other factors.
  • Recipients must enroll in USI during the fall or spring semester following their study abroad program and complete the requirements for the Global Engagement project within 6 months.


Exchange Program Scholarships 

  • $500 for the duration of the program
  • Open to all USI students who will receive USI credit for studies at one of USI's partner institutions.
  • Applicable to USI direct exchange partners only, not ISEP exchange.

Farless Study Abroad Scholarship


New Lanark Internship Scholarship

  • Open to full time degree-seeking students in all majors. Additional requirements will depend on specific internship opportunities.
  • Preference will be given to juniors and seniors, and to applicants who have not received USI study abroad scholarships in the past.


USI Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship

The USI Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship provides awards for students of diverse backgrounds and identities. This scholarship is intended to:
  • motivate underrepresented students to go abroad by easing the financial barrier
  • increase representation of diverse viewpoints on study abroad programs
For the purpose of this scholarship, diversity may include (but is not limited to) culture, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, parental status (if you have children), military status, ethnic or racial identities that contribute to the diversity of the student body. This scholarship is not need or merit based, and awards are granted on the strength of a student’s essays and interview.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Scholarship recipients must be in good academic standing 
  • Students from all majors and class standing who will study for a short-term, semester, or year-long program are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at the University of Southern Indiana at the time of applying
  • Applicants must be accepted to and participating in a credit-bearing, USI-approved short-term, semester, or year-long study abroad program
  • Apply through the myUSI study abroad portal


CIEE Frederick Douglass President's Match

Students who apply for the CIEE Frederick Douglass Fellowship but are not selected and instead are given CIEE's $1,500 Frederick Douglass Grant will also receive a matching grant of $1,500 from USI to be used toward a CIEE program! Available for up to 16 USI students. The deadline to apply for the fellowship is February 14.

  • Must be a recipient of CIEE's Frederick Douglass Grant
  • Available to the first 16 recipients
Nationally Competitive Scholarships
  • Gilman International Scholarships - for Pell eligible students only
    Term: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Academic Year
    Application Deadline: Early October for Spring programs or Summer Early Decision; Early March for Fall programs or Summer Regular Applications
  • Boren Scholarship - for less commonly taught languages
    Term: Academic year
    Application Deadline: January 29

  • Freeman- ASIA Offers Need-based funding for students to study a language program in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Terms: Summer, Semester, or Academic Year 
  • Rotary
    Term: Academic Year
    Application Deadline: At least one and a half years prior to award; contact your local chapter

  • Deutscher Akademischer Austausch (DAAD) - German government scholarship
    Term: Academic year
    Application Deadline: Late January

Program Specific Scholarships
  • CEA - CEA offers all USI students an automatic travel grant of $2,000 for the academic year, $1,000 for one semester, or $500 for summer. USI students are not eligible for any additional CEA Vouchers or Grants, however, students will be eligible to apply for CEA scholarships.
  • CIEE - Multiple need-based and merit-based scholarships. CIEE also has the Frederick Douglass Fellowship which is a fully-funded summer leadership program in Dublin, Ireland. Applicants who are not selected will receive the Frederick Douglass Grant of $1,500.
