Placement and Assessment

Placement

A CaMLA placement test including CaMLA speaking test and an in-house writing section will be administered to every new student to determine the appropriate level of instruction.

During the first week of class, instructors may make recommendations for placement adjustment based on a student's performance in classes.

At the end of each session, students in levels 4 and 6 will take the itpTOEFL tests to measure the students readiness to continue to the more academic subset of the program at level 4 or to complete the IEP at level 6.

If a student is dissatisfied with the initial placement, he or she will submit a Placement Modification Form to the Director of the IEP. The Director will discuss the issue with the student and if necessary conduct an unofficial Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) process in presence of a committee. First, the student will answer some basic information questions, listing of words, and responses to questions related to a visual. Then he/she will be asked to do some description and/or narration in the past, present and future. Finally, he/she will respond to a prompt asking him/her to give his/her opinion on a current topic. Also, the Director will consult recommendations from the teachers of the relevant level. An instructor in the program can also submit this form for the same purpose.

Assessment

Assessment is formative and includes projects, quizzes, mid-term and final exams, as well as participation and homework. Generally, if a student fails one class within a level, he or she will need to repeat the whole level. However, there is a level promotion policy that IEP teachers apply when determining if a student is ready to be promoted to the next level.

Students graduating from the Intensive English Program will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to pursue their future interests.

Exceptions will be considered case by case.
