Indiana Lifeline Law

The Indiana Lifeline Law provides immunity for some alcohol-related offenses, subject to certain conditions, to people who request medical assistance for someone in need or receive medical assistance due to a request by someone else.

The law provides immunity for the crimes of public intoxication, minor possession, minor consumption and minor transportation of alcohol to people who reveal themselves to law enforcement while seeking medical assistance for a person suffering from an alcohol-related health emergency.

To receive immunity, the person must demonstrate that he/she is acting in good faith by completing ALL of the following:

• Provide full name and any other relevant information requested by law enforcement officers.
• Remain on the scene until law enforcement and emergency medical assistance arrive.
• Cooperate with authorities on the scene.

The law does not interfere with law enforcement procedures or limit the ability to prosecute for other criminal offenses such as providing alcohol to a minor, operating while intoxicated or possession of a controlled substance.

USI Medical Amnesty Policy

• If you are under the influence and seek emergency medical assistance for a friend, you may be granted amnesty from some disciplinary sanctions by the University.
• You may still have to complete an educational program or meet with someone to discuss safe decision-making.

Alcohol Emergency Signs and Symptoms

• Trouble communicating
• Can't stand without help
• Doesn't wake up
• Slow breathing
• Cool, pale, bluish skin
• Irregular or slow pulse
• Vomits while passed out

What To Do

• Call Public Safety 812-492-7777 (dial 7777 from an on-campus phone)
• Place the person on his/her side
• Don't leave the person alone
