Human Papillomavirus Infections: Separating fact from fiction to help patient health

Description
Dental professionals see, on average, two patients with premalignant lesions per month and about two patients with of oral cancer during their careers. Some of these are caused by Human Papillomavirus. However, multiple misunderstandings about HPV transmission and cancer risk have arisen and may be a barrier to clear communication and effective prevention, diagnosis, and management of HPV-associated diseases. Most importantly, we have developed powerful new techniques and approaches for preventing some cancers caused by HPV. In this course, you will learn to recognize the benign and malignant lesions of the oral region associated with HPV, how to discuss these with your patients and their parents, and an evidence-based approach for helping prevent and detect HPV-associated cancers of the oral region. This online course will be enlivened with cases and active learning exercises.

Dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and other interested health professionals

At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:

1. List benign oral lesions associated with HPV infection
2. Explain the relationship between HPV and certain malignancies
3. Compare the most common cause of oral carcinoma and oropharyngeal carcinoma
4. Explain how you can help prevent HPV-associated malignancies 
5. Effectively screen patients for oral cancer

Dr. Sara Gordon is Professor of Oral Medicine and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Washington, School of Dentistry. She previously taught dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students in Halifax NS,  Detroit MI, and Chicago IL. A popular CE speaker, she has given nearly 200 CE and professional presentations on every continent except Antarctica, and authored about 100 scholarly publications.  Her focus is oral pathology, oral medicine, and diagnosis/treatment planning. Her mission is to widen the scope of everyday dentistry to include medicine of the orofacial complex. 
A Canadian, she completed a DDS at Dalhousie University and practiced general dentistry for 8 years in Halifax before completing an oral pathology residency and MS in Pathology at the University of Western Ontario.  Dr. Gordon is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral Pathology and in Oral Medicine, Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Fellow in Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine of Drexel University, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. 
She is very active in national academia. Currently Women’s Liaison Officer and a founding member of the Women In Leadership Section of the American Dental Education Association, she is past chair of three ADEA Sections: Academic Affairs and Academic Deans, Addiction Education, and Oral Pathology. She serves on the University of Washington’s Advisory Group to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine regarding prevention of sexual harassment on campuses. Dr. Gordon is former president of the Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Medicine. She lives in Seattle with her husband of 35 years and they still also have a home in rural Nova Scotia.
