The annual Institute for Alcohol and Drug Studies will focus on current substance use disorders, alcohol and drug trends, the role of trauma in addiction, cannabidiol (CBD) and trends in the use and distribution of illegal narcotics. In addition to a variety of other topics, the Institute will also provide HIV, HepC and Ethics education.  This inter-professional conference provides practical tools and ground-breaking information related to successful intervention, rehabilitation, and treatment.

Target Audience

Counselors, social workers, case managers, therapists, psychologists, educators, advance practice nurses, certified nurse specialists, nurses, healthcare providers, personnel directors, correction personnel, teachers and others interested in problems of alcohol and drug use disorders and all addictions.

Wednesday, May 18, 2022, Plenary Presenter

David Berman, MPH, MPA, is the Vice President of Harm Reduction and Crisis Intervention Services for Mental Health America of Indiana, Director of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Indiana, and Director of the Indiana Suicide Prevention Network.  Mr. Berman currently serves as the chair of the Division of Mental Health and Addiction’s Indiana Recovery Council and sits on their Mental Health and Addiction Planning and Advisory Committee and their Recovery Support Workgroup.  Through his role with Mental Health America of Indiana, he provides leadership, advocacy, support related to mood disorders and recovery, suicide prevention, disaster mental health and resiliency.  A certified trainer for QPR, ASIST, safeTALK, CALM, Mental Health First Aid Adult and Fire/EMS, CISM, and PsySTART, he develops programs for first responders focused on trauma-informed care, as well as mitigating the effects of secondary-trauma through self-care and peer support.  Mr. Berman is a graduate of the University of Maryland with bachelor’s degrees in biology and psychology, as well as master’s degrees in both public health and public administration.

Patrick McElwaine, PsyD., is an Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at Holy Family University and a faculty member at the Beck Institute. Dr. McElwaine has over 20 years clinical experience in various settings including outpatient community mental health clinics, residential treatment facilities, primary care settings, clinical private practice, and inpatient treatment, with expertise in addiction, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Dr. McElwaine’s research interests focus on addiction, mental health, and stigma with an emphasis on contributing to recovery-oriented principles such as resiliency, empowerment, confidence, autonomy, and a sense of purpose. He is a member of multiple professional psychology organizations, and he serves on the Montgomery County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Council. At settings including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), various school and hospital organizations, and the Lilly Conference, he has conducted numerous presentations related to mental health, addiction, stigma, and pedagogy.

Shannon Dunn, PhD, LCSW, CRADC, is a Clinical Teaching Associate Professor with the University of Southern California.  She has been most interested in the impact of trauma, manifesting in all mental health diagnoses and addiction. Trauma can occur from many environments, including family, communities, military, bullying in the schools, mental health treatment delivery systems, identifying as LGBTQ, and racial ethnicity and more. 

Dr. Dunn has been teaching at the Master of Social Work level for 20 years and has been involved with clinical supervision for many years prior to teaching. She is the author of the book Healing the Distress of Psychosis: Listening with Psychotic Ears.

CE hours will be available for Nurses, Physicians, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Psychologists, CHES, MCHES and Health Facility Administrators.  CE hours will also be available for Indiana licensed Marriage & Family Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants and Dental professions.

Gene Nance Professional Conference Attendance Fee Fund
Financial assistance in the form of fully paid conference registrations will be awarded to first time attendees to the Institute for Alcohol and Drug Studies, based on financial need of the applicant and amount of funds available from the Gene Nance Professional Conference Attendance Fee Fund.  To be considered for the award, submit: (a) a letter of request that explains why you want to attend, how it would benefit you professionally, an overview of your need for financial assistance; and (b) a letter of reference from a professional colleague or supervisor. Send both documents, to Kelley Collazo at kacollazo@usi.edu  by April 22, 2022.
