Social work students at LEAD Day 2019

Legislative Education and Advocacy

The Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-IN) sponsors a LEAD Day every year. LEAD stands for Legislative Education and Advocacy Development. It takes place at the Indiana State House and provides social work students the opportunity to visit the State House, learn about the legislative process, hear updates on current legislation that is relevant to the field, and network with other social workers and social work students and faculty.

The purpose of LEAD is to:

  • promote social justice by facilitating Indiana social workers maximum participation in the legislative process
  • create community and legislative environments in which social work values are accepted and implemented by policy makers in Indiana
  • education social workers and students (members & non-members) about the importance of influencing state policy by encouraging effective participation in the electoral process and by advocating for statewide actions that promote progressive social policies

CSJE facilitates a LEAD trip roughly every other year with a group of interested USI social work students. Our next trip is scheduled for February 2023!
