The Art and Design Department at the University of Southern Indiana helps students define their artistic goals and prepares students to become contributing members of the art and design profession, the community and society as a whole. Four integrated academic areas - studio art, graphic design, art education and art history - advance technical and conceptual skills, cultivate critical thinking and fulfill creative potential.
The department offers art and art education majors with students earning either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Southern Indiana. At USI, the difference between the two degrees lies within the University Core 39 Curriculum.
Art majors choose an emphasis in:
Studio art includes ceramics, jewelry, painting, printmaking, sculpture, or woodworking
Art education majors select visual art P-12 (visual art teaching) with a minor in P-12 education licensure to qualify to teach all primary, middle school and secondary grades.
Minors are offered in studio art, graphic design, digital video, photography, arts and heritage administration and art history. Art education minors are available for students receiving an education degree in a non-art discipline.
Internship programs offer junior and senior art students the opportunity to work in professional settings at design studios, museums and galleries.
An art or art education degree from USI prepares students to achieve success as designers, artists, photographers, teachers, museum and gallery personnel and art historians, as well as pursue graduate studies in art and design related fields.
