The University of Southern Indiana College of Liberal Arts hosted a Recruitment Day on March 19, 2019, in honor of the new Africana Studies program. Africana Studies Recruitment Day included A Head Wrap Workshop: From Africa to the Americas in which participants learned about the tradition and could view and wear head wraps from different cultures. Following the workshop, international recording artist, Zion, performed a reggae concert and talk about Afro-Caribbean culture. That evening, there was a viewing of the film Blackkklansman followed by a discussion panel.
The Africana Studies minor at USI is committed to the study of the past, present, and future experiences and perspectives of Africans, African Americans, and peoples of African descent. This program takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the diversity of peoples and cultures that stems from these three perspectives. Students are encouraged to explore questions and issues surrounding ability, class, culture, ethnicity, gender, identity, race, and sexuality, from diverse viewpoints. Students are required to think critically and conduct research, as they prepare to be mindful, analytical, and engaged members of the global community.
