English Teaching

English teaching programs at the University of Southern Indiana prepare students to teach literature, composition and reading comprehension in elementary and secondary schools.

In coordination with licensure programs in the Teacher Education Department, coursework addresses pedagogical issues in teaching English, as well as provides a strong background in areas such as literature, rhetoric and writing.

English Teaching Programs

The English department offers a major in English teaching and minors in English teaching and language arts teaching.

Secondary Education

The major in English teaching culminates in the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. A bachelor's degree in English teaching prepares students for careers in secondary education (grades five through 12) and should be completed with the secondary education licensure minor. Additional admission requirements through the Teacher Education Department may apply. Students preparing for careers in teaching secondary school in the liberal arts should review the College of Liberal Arts' teacher licensing policy

The Bachelor of Arts degree requires 12 semester hours in the same foreign language or demonstration of proficiency at that level of study.

Elementary, Early Childhood and Special Education

Students planning to teach English in elementary schools (pre-kindergarten through grade six) should complete the English teaching minor or language arts teaching minor. Teacher licensure should be completed through a major in early childhood education, elementary education or special education, offered through the Teacher Education Department.
