Driving on USI Business

All employees, students, student workers, and volunteers whose job responsibilities or requested duties involve driving on USI Business, must meet the requirements of the Vehicle Safety Policy found in the University Handbook.

USI BUSINESS

USI Business means activities that further the mission of the University. This applies to local, in-state, out of state, or assigned job duties (on or off campus), regardless of the frequency or distance of the approved USI business trip or activity. Examples include conferences, meetings, campus tours, supervised student clinicals, field trips, academic competitions, recruiting, etc.

IMPORTANT: Based on the criteria in the Vehicle Safety Policy and the provisions of the University Handbook, all employee(s), student(s), or volunteer(s) who drive on approved USI business, must be an Authorized Driver. Unauthorized drivers are not allowed to drive on behalf of the University.

USI VEHICLE(S) ARE DEFINED AS:

  • USI owned, leased, loaned, and rented licensed motor vehicles
  • USI owned, leased, or loaned golf/utility carts (licensed or unlicensed)
  • Personal vehicle when operated on USI Business

USI DRIVERS ARE DEFINED AS:

“Potential” Drivers: Employees, students, or volunteers who may drive for USI Business

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license
  • Employee (faculty, staff) of USI whose job description requires driving as a condition of employment.
  • Employee of USI on official business travel
  • USI student (undergraduate, graduate) working in a paid position on campus who is either traveling on valid USI business or whose job description requires driving as a condition of employment.
  • USI student, at the request of their professor, traveling on approved USI Business
  • Another individual who may be permitted on an occasional basis to drive on valid USI business.

USI “Authorized” Driver: Employees, students, or volunteers who have completed the Driver Requirements in the Vehicle Safety Policy. Authorized Drivers may drive on USI Business

“Conditional” Driver: An Authorized Driver who must comply with assigned conditions, per Appendix B of the Vehicle Safety Policy, to continue to drive a USI vehicle
