Pass/No Pass Grading Guidance for Spring 2020

Grade Point Average (GPA)

  • Courses taken as P/NP will not affect the student’s term or cumulative GPA.
  • Courses with a grade of "P" will count toward the 120 credit hours needed for graduation. However, grades of "P" may not be used to meet graduation requirements of specific programs identified in the "Specific Academic Program Guidelines" section below.

Course Repeat

  • Courses taken as P/NP will not replace a letter grade (A through F) in a course taken prior to the current semester.
  • If a student takes a course twice and receives "D" or higher for one attempt, and a "P" for another attempt, the student can only use one attempt towards the 120 credit hours needed for graduation.

Pre-Requisites

  • For the Spring 2020 semester only, a "P" grade will satisfy prerequisites that require a specific grade performance (for example, "C or better") except for those courses identified in the "Specific Academic Program Guidelines" section below.

Dean’s List, Commencement Honors, Graduation Honors

  • Courses takes as P/NP will not be used to meet GPA requirements for the Dean’s List, Commencement Honors, Graduation Honors, or other academic honors.
  • A student must receive letter grades (A through F) for 12 credit hours in a semester to be eligible for the Dean’s List.

Financial Aid

  • Courses taken as P/NP will be used in completion rate calculations for financial aid.
  • Courses taken as P/NP will be used to meet enrollment requirements for financial aid.
  • Specific questions about financial aid should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

College Achievement Program (CAP)/Dual Credit

  • Students enrolled in the CAP program have the option to take courses as P/NP. Students and teachers should direct questions to USI’s CAP program.
  • The university will accept dual credit courses with grades of "P" from other regionally accredited colleges and universities for Spring 2020 only.

Fresh Start Program

  • Students enrolled in the Fresh Start program must complete 12 credit hours with earned letter grades (A through F) in order to apply for financial aid.  Grades of P/NP will not count as part of the 12 credit hours.

University Scholarships

  • Courses with grades of "P" will satisfy scholarship renewal criteria.

Transfer Credit

  • The university will accept transfer grades of "P" from regionally accredited institutions for the Spring 2020 semester. However, grades of "P" may not be used for admission into specific programs identified in the "Specific Academic Program Guidelines" section below.
  • The university cannot guarantee that grades of "P" will be accepted as transfer credits at other colleges and universities. Students should check with those institutions if they choose to transfer credits.

International Students and Study Abroad

  • International students should make P/NP decisions in consultation with their liaisons on the USI campus.
  • Students who are studying abroad in Spring 2020 may take courses as P/NP. Please work with the Center for International Programs to discuss this option.

Students Receiving Military Benefits

  • Students should make P/NP decisions in consultation with their liaisons on the USI campus.

Student Athletes

  • Student athletes will be able to count P/NP course work towards eligibility at this time.
  • P/NP does count toward the 9 credit hour requirement needed for eligibility.
  • P/NP would hinder a student that is currently INELIGIBLE to become eligible if GPA improvement is the goal.
  • Other policies connected to P/NP impact student athletes the same way it impacts the general student population.

Graduate School or Professional School (Medical, Law, Dental, etc.)

  • Students are encouraged to talk to the appropriate pre-professional faculty advisor before deciding to choose P/NP.
  • Students should also consult with graduate or professional schools of interest to determine if courses taken P/NP satisfy admission criteria.

Appeal Process

The purpose of the Spring 2020 Pass/No-Pass Administrative Appeal is to determine if there is an administrative policy that was misapplied for the modified spring 2020 Pass/No Pass (P/NP) policy. Administrative policy issues include, but are not limited to, calendar deadlines, instructor/advisor approval, and other relevant student-administrative issues. Spring 2020 Pass/No-Pass Appeals must be submitted by May 29, 2020.

The student must write a detailed narrative describing the administrative policy that was misapplied and explain specifically what they are asking for and why they believe their situation should be considered by the committee. To file an appeal, a student must fill out the Spring 2020 Pass/No-Pass Administrative Appeal Request form; the form should be typed to ensure legibility. All appeals must be signed by the student (student’s digital signature is temporarily being accepted, but it must be submitted from your USI student email account to be accepted). Appeals written by anyone other than the student will NOT be accepted.

The completed appeal request form should be Faxed (812-464-1911) or Scanned/Emailed (usi1adappeal@usi.edu) to the Administrative Appeals Committee for review.

Please send any questions regarding the Spring 2020 Pass/No-Pass Administrative Appeal process to the usi1adappeal@usi.edu.
