The mission of the Health Informatics and Information Management Program is to provide students with specialized training in using information technology to support effective health care administration, innovative health care services delivery, secure patient-centric health care, leadership skills, quality assurance, finance and legal and regulatory requirements.
Developed in response to the changes and demands of the healthcare industry, the Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management (BSHIIM) is designed for a wide range of students including those who have just graduated from high school or adult learners who want to return to school and complete their bachelor's degree. Transfer programs from two-year campuses have been developed so learners can begin their education at local community colleges and then transfer to USI to complete their bachelor's degree. In addition to traditional students, many students with Information Technology (IT) or health care preparation at the associates level - such as associates degree prepared nurses or Health Information Management professionals - can complete the HIIM Bachelor's program. Discipline-specific courses are offered as distance courses as well as traditional classroom-based courses.
USI’s BSHIIM program combines concepts in healthcare, information technology, and management practice to provide graduates with the knowledge needed to be a valuable designer, implementer, and manager of health information systems. This degree, geared to the needs of the current workplace, also allows students from other disciplines to complement their existing field of expertise (e.g. computer information systems, liberal arts, and others).
BSHIIM Program provides the following:
By studying health informatics and information management, students can acquire a versatile yet focused skill set incorporating clinical, information technology, leadership, and management skills. Because of this unique blend, BSHIIM graduates are able to choose from a variety of work settings across an array of healthcare environments.
