Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy assesses and treats breathing disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Respiratory Therapists are also involved in critical care situations and life support measures such as ventilators. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and 100% of our students pass the licensing exam on the first try.

Admission Requirements

  • The student must be accepted to USI
  • The student must have completed the prerequisite courses before applying.

Admission Process

Students must submit the following application materials to the Respiratory Therapy Administrative Assistant by October 1:

  • Application to the Respiratory Therapy Program - found here
  • Completion of 12 hours of observation in a hospital respiratory therapy department; verification form found here.

FAQ 

What is the average accepted GPA?
Students should strive to have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale in the prerequisite admission courses.


When is the application deadline? Is admission multiple times a year?
October 1 for admission into the program for the following spring term. Admission is once a year.


How many students are accepted each year?
A total of 18 students are accepted each year for the Respiratory Therapy Program.


How many applications do you typically receive for the Respiratory Program?
Approximately 40 applications are received each year for the Respiratory Therapy Program.


When will I know if I am accepted?
Notifications from the Respiratory Program are sent by email to the applicant in November. To ensure receipt of your notification, please ensure the Respiratory Therapy Department has your correct USI email address.
