The student must have completed the pre-requisite courses with a letter grade of a "C" or above; students can be enrolled in pre-requisites when applying.
The student must have at least a 2.75 GPA
The specialties offered are: gerontology, health administration, health promotion and work site wellness, public health, and long term care administration.
All specialties require the student to complete two semesters of internships.
Students are recommended to think about adding a minor in business or another field.

What is the average accepted GPA?
Students should strive to have a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale in the prerequisite admission courses.
When is the application deadline? Is admission multiple times a year?
How many students are accepted each year?
Approximately 40 students are accepted each admission cycle for each speciality.
How many applications do you typically receive for the Health Services Specialties?
The number of applications varies depending upon the specialty. Health Administration is very popular and we receive 50-75 applications each cycle; for all other specialties we receive approximately 40-50 applications each cycle.
When will I know if I am accepted?
Notifications will be mailed to you around April 1 the year of acceptance. To ensure receipt of your notification, please ensure the HIIM Department has your correct USI email and mailing address.

Gerontology: studies the biological and social aspect of our aging population.
Health Administration: is truly the "business side" of health care. Students in this area study marketing, leadership, finance, and quality from a health care perspective.
Health Promotion and Worksite Wellness: focuses on the design, delivery, and assessment of health education programs. There is an emphasis on preventative care and health promotion. Students who graduate in this specialty are eligible to take the CHES (certified health education specialist) exam. Successful completion of this exam allows the graduate to be a national certified health educator.
Long Term Care Administration: merges the study areas of gerontology and health administration. This specialty is for students who decide to become administrators or department managers of long term facilities.
Public Health: studies the way public health strives to improve the health of communities. It emphasizes the study of disease control and prevention as well as public health education and administration. This specialty prepares students to enroll in Master of Public Health (MPH) programs.
