Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), also called ultrasound, is the science of using sound waves to create a diagnostic image to investigate an illness, injury, or possible treatment of a disease. It is a multifaceted profession consisting of many specialty areas. These areas include abdominal, obstetrics, and gynecology, vascular, and cardiac sonography.

The program is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and over 90% of our graduates pass the certification exam on the first try.

Once accepted, students will participate in a full time 28-months continuous program that includes summer courses.

Admission Requirements

  • The student must be accepted to USI
  • The student must have completed the program prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better PRIOR to application deadline of September 15th
  • The student must have at least a 3.0 GPA in prerequisite coursework
  • The student must complete a minimum of 20 hours with a maximum of 60 hours of observation in a sonography setting 
  • The student must complete the Admission Process and be accepted to the program

Admission Process

Students must submit the following application materials to the DMS Administrative Assistant by September 15:

  1. Application to the DMS Program - found here
  2. Submission of a narrative titled addressing specific criteria outlined here
  3. Documentation of completed observation hours. All observation hours must be documented in the observation log and verified by the supervising sonographer.

Selected students will also have an interview with DMS committee as part of the admission process. We highly recommend scheduling a mock interview with USI's Career Services and Internships office as well as your Academic Advisor for interview practice.

What is the average accepted GPA?
Students should strive to have a 3.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale in the prerequisite admission courses. From 2016-2018 the average GPA of accepted students was a 3.6.


When is the application deadline? Is admission multiple times a year?
September 15 for admission into the program for the following spring term. Interviews are typically conducted mid-October with accepted students beginning the program the following spring. Admission is once a year.


How many students are accepted each year?
A total of 10 students are accepted each year for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.


How many applications do you typically receive for DMS?
Approximately 30 applications are received each year for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program.


When will I know if I am accepted?
Notifications from the DMS Program are sent by email to the applicant in October following the completion of the admission interview.  To ensure receipt of your notification, please ensure the DMS Department has your correct USI email address.
