Who is my academic advisor? To find the name of your academic advisor, log into myUSI, and click on the graduation cap icon for Degree Works under the Eagle Apps. Your advisor will be listed in the information box at the top of the page.

How do I make an advising appointment? To make an appointment with your academic advisor, you'll need to use AdvisorTrac. To access AdvisorTrac, log into myUSI, and click on the picture of three people with question marks above their head for AdvisorTrac. On the left-side menu click search availabilities and follow the directions listed on that page.

If you are assigned to a faculty advisor, you will need to contact that individual directly as some faculty advisors are not using AdvisorTrac for scheduling.

When will I be assigned a faculty advisor? This varies by advising center:

College of Liberal Arts: You will be assigned a professional advisor and a faculty member will be your secondary advisor for your freshman year. Once you complete your freshman year, your faculty advisor will be your primary advisor.

College of Nursing and Health Professions: For "pre" students you will be working with a professional advisor in the Advising Center until you are accepted into your program. Once accepted, you will be assigned to a faculty member within your major. For Health Services Generalists students once you have 30 credit hours completed you will be assigned a faculty advisor.

Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education: You will work with a professional advisor until you complete specific prerequisite courses within your major. Once the prerequisite courses are met students are assigned a faculty advisor within the department.

Romain College of Business: You will work with a professional advisor until you complete specific prerequisite courses within your major. Once the prerequisite courses are met students are assigned a faculty advisor within the department.

Center for Exploring Majors: You will work with a professional advisor until you either declare a major or complete 60 credit hours of coursework. At that time, you will either transition to the Advising Center or a faculty member in your major.

What is Core 39? To earn a bachelor's degree at USI, you must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, with 39 of those credit hours fulfilling the USI Core 39 requirements. Core 39 includes courses in the broad traditions of the liberal arts and a common set of experiences that are integrated across the curriculum. In our core, students expand foundational skills in communication and critical thinking, explore how different fields create and use knowledge, broaden their viewpoints through the study of diverse and global perspectives, and refine their writing skills through writing-intensive experiences.

How do I change my major? You can change your major by picking up a Change of Academic Program form from either the Registrar's Office or any Advising Center. You are responsible for obtaining the appropriate signatures from the department you are changing your major to and for returning the form to the Registrar's Office.

How do I add a minor? You add a minor in the same way you add or change your major - by picking up a Change of Academic Program form. There is a section of that form that allows you to add or drop a minor. You are responsible for obtaining the appropriate signatures from the department you are changing your major to and for returning the form to the Registrar's Office.

How many classes should I take a semester? To be a full-time student, you need to take a minimum of 12 credit hours a semester. Advisors generally recommend between 12-18 credit hours a semester and to complete at least 30 credit hours each academic year if you wish to graduate in four years. The number of credit hours you take your freshmen year can depend on any dual credits, CAP classes, or AP credits you earned while in high school, but typically a student takes 15 credit hours a semester.

How do I register for fall, spring, or summer classes? Registration for the next semester starts around midterms each academic year; with the ability to register for summer classes available when registering for the spring term. Registration dates are published on the USI academic calendar.

How do I add a class to my schedule? Before the semester begins and through the first week of classes, you can add a class to your schedule using either Schedule Planner or Self Service. Once the semester begins, you will need to work with your advisor to add a class.

How do I drop a class from my schedule? Before the semester begins and through the first week of classes, you can drop a class using Self Service through myUSI. Once the semester begins, you will need to work with your advisor to drop a class.

What if a course is closed? What does that mean? If the course is closed, that means that all the seats in that class or section have been taken and you will not be able to register for that class or section. Some courses offer a waitlist, but not every class. If you have questions about the closed class or waitlist, please contact the department that is offering the class. Advisors do not have the ability to put you in a class that is full or on a waitlist.

How do I get on a waitlist? If a course is offering a waitlist, you can add yourself to it through Self Service in myUSI.

  • Once in Self Service and under the Student tab, choose Registration, then Add or Drop Classes.
  • Type in the CRN (5-digit course reference number) of the course you want to waitlist in the boxes below the drop-down menus.
  • Click the submit changes button and when the class comes up, use the drop-down menu to select "Waitlist" and submit changes.

If enough students drop out of the class to reach your name on the waitlist, you will receive an email from the Registrar's Office with instructions on how to officially add the class to your schedule. Once you receive that email, you will have 24 hours to register for the class. If you do not register for the class within 24 hours of receiving the email from the Registrar's Office, you will lose your spot and will need to put yourself back on the waitlist.

There is no guarantee that you will get into the waitlisted class. If there is an open section of the same class, the Advising Centers recommend that you sign up for the open section to guarantee that you have a seat in the course.

What is a registration hold? If you have any holds on your student account, you will receive an email from the Registrar's Office, or you can check for holds using Self Service or Degree Works. A "hold" is placed on your account by an academic office when important transactions or documents have not been received. You will be blocked from scheduling or changing your class schedule until your holds have been lifted.

How can I view my schedule? You can find your schedule in your Self Service through myUSI. Click on the Student tab, then Registration, then you can choose either Concise Student Schedule, View your Schedule, or Week at a Glance.

How do I know what books are required for a class? Updates coming soon!

What is academic probation? Students who do not meet the minimum standards of academic progress will be placed on academic probation for one semester. During that semester, the student should make use of the available university resources to improve academic skills and performance. Failure to meet the minimum standards of progress at the end of the probationary semester will result in academic dismissal from the university.
