On April 8, 2024 at 2:02pm CDT, Evansville Indiana will experience its second solar eclipse in the last 7 years. This time around, Evansville will be within the path of totality, meaning the moon will totally cover the sun for around 3 mins. USI will host an eclipse viewing event for the general public and provide opportunities to safely view the eclipse with the proper eclipse glasses and several telescopes equipped with solar filters. USI will also host eclipse programs for local schools and the general public before and on the day of the eclipse. Please check this page often for updated information as we approach this exciting event.
The photographs shown here are from the previous eclipse that took place on August 21, 2017. USI Geology & Physics invited over 700 students from Elementary and Middle Schools in our region for activities and viewing of the solar eclipse on campus. There were several solar-filtered telescopes, along with eclipse glasses, with which the entirety of the eclipse was safely observed. The maximum eclipse occurred at 1:24 p.m. Many thanks to Matthew Merlo and Jeff Polak for all of their hard work in making this event a huge success.
