USI High School Art Day

Join us on Saturday, October 26, 2019!

USI High School Art Day is a free opportunity for high school students, grades 9-12, made possible thanks to a grant from the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana.

USI Art Day will be held on USI's campus in the Arts Center (formerly called the Technology Center) on Saturday, October 26, 2019.

• 9 a.m. | Event begins with a brief orientation and introductions of the USI Art and Design faculty
• 9:30am - 12:00pm | First session of workshops 
• 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. | Lunch (provided by USI) 
• 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. | Second session of workshops
• 3:30 - 4:00 p.m. | Short tour of the department and gallery 
• Event ends at 4:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to sign up for a morning and afternoon session, or whichever works best with your schedule.

Class Descriptions

MORNING

• Groovy Oil Painting
  Nancy Raen-Mendez
  10 students
  >> This workshop will use an indirect compositional process to create designs in oil paint.  Our inspiration will come from music.
  
  
• Not Your Average Birdhouse
  Rob Millard-Mendez
  12 students
  >> Participants will make cool, unique birdhouses out of wood that are also art objects.
  
  
• Everyone Can Code
  Min Pak
  12 students
  >> Technology has a language and it’s called code. In this workshop, you will learn about the web development process and design and code a webpage for social good using HTML/CSS. By the end of workshop, you will have starter code to take home and work on. You will experience the full power of technology.
  
  ** Students need to bring: Post-it Notes (2 colors), Index Cards, Graph Paper, Pen, Notebook
  
  
• Forever Pumpkin Carving and Horse Hair Firing
  Al Holen
  15 students
  >> Students will each get to carve a ceramic earthenware pumpkin that will last forever! They will then get on the potter’s wheels to learn how to throw “closed forms” like the ones that they will have completed carving.  Lastly, students will also be able to “Horse Hair-Raku” fire a piece of bisque ware that will be provided.  These pieces will go home with the students, but pumpkins will need to be picked up one week after Art Day!
  
  **Students must wear closed toe shoes and should wear a long-sleeved / natural fiber shirt for firing. You will get dirty!
  
  
• How to Draw Objects

  >> This session will include a demonstration of how to draw a set of objects. During this session, students will gain enhanced drawing skills.
  
  
• Make Your Own Digital Caricature/Avatar(s)
  Chuck Armstrong
  18 students
  >> Using a selfie, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and a Wacom tablet, learn to create a stylized self-portrait caricature/avatar.

AFTERNOON

• Wood Joinery
  Rob Millard-Mendez
  10 students
  >> Participants will learn about the importance of wood joinery and they will make at least three interesting, fun joints.
  
  
• Wire-Wrapped Jewelry
  Jane Case Vickers
  10 students
  >> Spend the afternoon making wire wrapped and beaded jewelry with an emphasis on rings, in USI's jewelry studio. You will make multiple finished pieces to take with you.
  
  
• Paint-can Photography
  Photo Students
  10 students
  >> In this session we will make cameras out of paint cans and take black and white pictures. Students will work in the darkroom to develop out their prints.
  
  
• Write and Draw Your Own Comic Strip
  Chuck Armstrong

  >> We will write and draw a simple four (or more) panel comic using characters you create to tell a very simple story or joke. We will begin with paper and pencil and finish inking and coloring in Photoshop on Wacom tablets.
  
  
• Pronto-Plate Lithography
  Brett Anderson

  >> This hands-on workshop will introduce lithographic printing from polyester plates. Participants will create a collaborative series of monotypes, based upon the Surrealist “Exquisite Corpse” project.  From demonstrations and examples, the basics behind lithography, which relies on the incompatibility between water and oil-based ink, will be made clear. After demonstrations on how the process works, students will then be given studio time to create their own lithographic images. Student plates will be cut into thirds and combined with other participants’ imagery.  Students should bring ideas for images to create, either sketches/ sketchbook or photocopies of personal photos for tracing.
