Stephen Pace and the Figure
Spring 2010

This exhibition showcased nearly 50 years of Stephen Pace's interpretation of the female figure, a frequent theme of his paintings and sketchbooks.  As a young student of art in Evansville, Stephen was schooled in basic skeletal and muscle structures.  This particular discipline supports his ability to place a subtle line or shape and have it reflect the suggestion of a muscle or a bend of a joint.  The earliest figure paintings on display were executed in the 1960s as his female figures were emerging from his abstract expressionist compositions of the mid-20th century.  Over the next several decades Pace's graceful lines and organic shapes of color evolved into more compact and angular figures.
