Post MSN Certificate Program

Completion Details

Master's prepared students may apply for admission to receive a post master's certificate in the following specialties: 

Each MSN transcript will be evaluated once a student has been accepted into the Post MSN program. The transcript review will determine the need for the Post MSN clinical core courses: Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology and Advanced Health Assessment.

Adult-Gerontology ACNP, CNS, FNP, FPMHNP Post Master's Certificate option:

The applicant must be able to provide documentation of successful completion of a Pharmacology course at the graduate level within the last five (5) years. If this course has not been completed within the past five years, the student will be required to complete this courses at USI in the Post Master's Program.

NURS 618 Physical Assessment is a required course for the Post MSN Certificate program.  Previous coursework for physical assessment will not be transferred in unless it has been completed at USI in the past academic year.   

Transfer course information

You may transfer in up to 6 credit hours in the Post MSN Certificate program.  These courses include graduate-level Pathophysiology and Pharmacology.  To consider transfer credits please consider the following questions:

Do I have a 3- credit hour Pathophysiology course at the graduate level?  Is my course grade a B or higher? Do I have a 3- credit hour Pharmacology course at the graduate level and do I hold prescriptive authority in the state I practice?  Was my course grade a B or higher? 

These questions will be used to evaluate transfer credits in the Post MSN Certificate Program.  All students are required to take Advanced Health Assessment (first clinical course) through USI.  Evaluation of previous course work will determine your semester start date. 

NURS 617 Advanced Pathophysiology: Runs fall semester.  
NURS 622 Clinical Pharmacology: Runs spring semester. 
NURS 618 Advanced Health Assessment: Runs summer semesters (10 weeks begins Summer 1)


Requirements for Post MSN Certificate Program include a minimum of 3 to 5 actual hours of study per week for each one credit hour (example:  if you are taking a 3 hour course, you will need to study at a minimum of 9 to 15 hours weekly). This is in addition to listening to online lectures.  

Clinical courses include clinical hours in addition to the study requirements above.  The range of clinical hours required in APN courses is between 8 to 24 hours weekly.

There are no campus visits required for this program.
