The University of Southern Indiana’s College of Nursing and Health Professions received a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to develop a residency program for nurse practitioner graduates in the specialty areas of family nurse practitioner (FNP) and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). The residents will be located in primary care settings serving rural and underserved populations in southwestern Indiana.
In addition to the recruitment of nurse practitioners, program goals include education of nurse practitioners in an interprofessional model implemented in primary care clinics; utilization of telehealth at clinics to increase patient access and enhance the role of the nurse practitioner; and use of rapid cycle quality improvement as a continuous improvement mechanism.
