In November, the USI Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), in partnership with Dementia-Friendly Petersburg and Dementia-Friendly Rockport, is honoring the care partners of people living with dementia.
Our workshops span across a variety of topics, including Healthy Eating, Storytelling and Community Resources. We hope you can join us to learn more about dementia and connect with community partners and other caregivers. All sessions will be recorded.

Tuesday, November 2, Noon CT This education program is designed for those who want to learn more about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, and those who have noticed memory or thinking changes in themselves or others. This education program will help you recognize common signs of the disease in yourself and others and next steps to take, including how to talk to your doctor. |
Thursday, November 4, Noon CT Your loved one has been diagnosed with dementia. Now what? Where do you go? Who helps? In this workshop, we will share with you the local resources in the Southwest Indiana region. |
Friday, November 5, Noon CT Learn how to work with your loved one to share their story in a creative, fun, and hands-on activity! |
Friday, November 5, 2 p.m. CT We will look at a documentary and have an interactive discussion. From diagnosis to saying the long goodbye, caregivers share their diverse experiences of caring for loved ones in the world of dementia. Alzheimer’s is more than memory loss; it affects many generations and is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Teepa Snow, Loretta Veney, Bob Schaefer and many more explain how they creatively navigate the frustrations, sorrows and complications of caring for a loved one who can no longer function safely on their own. This documentary is a production of the Community Idea Stations and WCVE PBS. |

Monday, November 8, Noon CT Alzheimer’s Association Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research program. This program is designed to offer you research-based recommendations about taking care of our brains and our bodies to age as well as possible. |
Tuesday, November 9, Noon CT Dementia Friends help everyone in the community understand five key messages about dementia, how it affects people, and how we can make a difference in the lives of people living with the disease and their caregivers. At the end of the session, we will give you many ideas to turn your understanding into action – to advance awareness and education of dementia, reduce the stigma associated with the disease, and create community environments that are welcoming and conducive for those living with dementia. |
Wednesday, November 10, Noon CT This step-by-step food demonstration showcases healthy foods. You will be able to follow along at home as we discuss nutrition as a dementia risk reduction strategy! |
Thursday, November 11, Noon CT Caregiving can be emotionally taxing for several reasons. It is essential to learn how to take a break (and not feel guilty about it). Join us to learn the why and how of caregiver breaks! |
Thursday, November 11, 4 p.m. CT Are you a student taking care of a loved on with dementia? Our support group meets monthly at the Minka. Join us to spend quality time together with other caregivers for support, encouragement and learning. Spread the word! |

Monday, November 15, 10 a.m. CT PREPARE is an advance care plan website that helps people make medical decisions for themselves and others. PREPARE uses five steps to help people create a plan: choose a medical decision maker, decide what matters most in life, choose flexibility for your decision maker, tell others about your wishes, and ask doctors the right questions. |
Tuesday, November 16, 7:30 a.m. CT Learn from a Deaconess provider the importance of early diagnosis. An early diagnosis helps everyone to plan for quality of life living. In addition, oftentimes, it is not dementia, but something else exhibiting similar symptoms. Seeing your doctor early helps to know the facts. |

Thursday, November 18, Noon CT Dementia Live offers a unique inside-out understanding of dementia and aging for direct care workers as well as family caregivers. This innovative program will enlighten you with a heightened awareness of the challenges faced by those who live with dementia. This experience takes about 30 minutes. It is offered at no charge to participants by the USI GWEP program. |
