Oncology-On Demand

Description of Program

The Oncology Management Program covers a wide scope of information from cell biology to survivorship.  The wide scope is necessary as oncology care has evolved beyond surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Care for the patient and family requires a multifaceted approach by the interprofessional team to safely care for current clinical and future needs.  The modules cover a vast amount of content concerning:

  • Cancer epidemiology, genetic risk, and detection measures
  • Treatment modalities such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, pharmacogenomics, precision medicine, hormone therapy
  • Symptom management of pain, gastrointestinal/genitourinary symptoms, hematologic consequences, fatigue, peripheral neuropathy, and alopecia
  • Awareness of oncologic emergencies resulting from cardiotoxicity, hepatoxicity, and pulmonary toxicity
  • Issues related to cognitive changes, psychosocial issues, developmental life stage considerations, sexual and reproductive issues, and needs associated with survivorship
  • Ethical awareness, complementary and alternative medicine, and palliative care

Many of the above themes relate to the topics outlined on the 2018 oncology certified nurse test content outline.  Information regarding certifications in oncology nursing can be obtained at http://www.oncc.org/
