Getting to Know Justin Bucherl, president of APS Club

USI's Accounting and Professional Services Club is a professional organization composed of accounting majors and others interested in accounting as a profession. The club is an official student chapter of the Institute Management Accountants (IMA), a national organization of professional accountants. The USI student chapter has received the Gold Award of Excellence on multiple occasions. The club is an affiliate of the Evansville Chapter of IMA.  As a member of the IMA, the club competes on a national level with other accounting clubs.

Justin '21 APS Club president

Justin Bucherl '21, accounting and finance, is president of APS Club. He gave us some insights into his experience as a student at Romain College and as a leader of APS.

What makes USI and the Romain College of Business special to you?
I like that classes are small. It is great knowing that your professors will know your name, and you have the opportunity to build relationships with your professors.

What are some of your favorite classes at Romain College and why?
My favorite class was Financial Modeling with Excel. It provides some real-world experience because anywhere a business student goes to work, you will have to know how to use Excel. This class taught financial modeling with the software and a bunch of tips and formulas that are often used.

Are you active in any other student organizations at USI?
I am also active in Beta Alpha Psi.

Why did you choose your current major and minor?
I wanted to do business but did not know what I wanted to do. I chose Accounting and Finance because you can do many different things with an Accounting degree, even run your own business one day.

What made you decide to pursue being an officer of your organization?
I wanted to be more involved in a club instead of just sit and listen. The president position was being offered, so I jumped on it hoping to gain some new connections and leadership experience.

Tell us more about your student organization and why USI students should get involved with it!
APS is USI’s accounting club. When you join APS, you then become a member of the IMA (Institute of Managerial Accountants) where you get newsletters, magazines and chances to go on trips to IMA national conventions. We also have joint meetings with BAP. In the meetings, we have professionals come to campus and speak about CPA exam, their past experiences or just advice. We also have Q&A time where you can talk to the professionals and help build your network.
