USI team competes at Maastricht University

Congratulations to our team of students who competed at the International Case Competition @ Maastricht (ICC@M). This is the first year for a team from USI to compete at this event hosted by the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. The competition was held April 29 – May 5, 2018, in Maastricht, Netherlands. USI was one of only 16 undergraduate teams from around the world invited to participate in what has been ranked among the 12 strongest competitions in the field, according to Maastricht's peer universities.

The competition addresses challenging international all-round business cases in a true crossing borders European environment. The first 3-hour case was about DHL Express and how the company could develop toward its 2050 mission of zero emissions. The teams also competed to see who could provide the best strategy to the town of Gemeente Maastricht. The case was about the Customer Service Valley: a collaboration of several companies with the municipality of Maastricht to enhance customer service centers and their image, to develop employment opportunities in customer services and to position Maastricht as the customer services hub. The USI team finished fourth in their division, followed by second in their division.

Students representing USI were Victoria Krug, finance and marketing; Ryan Loehrlein, engineering and finance;  Kevin Schuh, accounting and finance; and Te'Ayla Whitfield, accounting and finance. They were coached by Romain College of Business faculty member Jeanette Maier-Lytle, instructor in accounting.

The University of British Columbia placed first overall, followed by University of New South Wales (second place), Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (third), and Queen’s University (fourth).
