John M. Roberts, senior vice president, director of Research and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and senior analyst at Hilliard Lyons, presented his 2017 economic outlook at the University of Southern Indiana. Mr. Roberts spoke to a group of USI students, faculty members, and other professionals. He discussed his view of the global economic picture, how he sees the current stock market with a new administration coming into office and where he sees the market by the end of 2017. As to those sectors of the economy where opportunities may exist Mr. Roberts is bullish on consumer durables (retail) and healthcare.
For students interested in a financial career, Mr. Roberts emphasized the importance of developing good writing skills, along with accounting knowledge and the ability to read financial statements and understand how the markets function. He suggested that students should read about the economy and the political scene from reputable sources such as the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
Mr. Roberts’ investment philosophy is buying quality stocks and investing for the long run.
