Business Case Team Competes at Inaugural Heavener International Case Competition

A team of undergraduate students from the University of Southern Indiana’s Romain College of Business participated in the first annual Heavener International Case Competition (HICC) held in Gainesville, Florida, February 15-20. The by-invitation-only event is hosted by the University of Florida.

The team included Alicia Bowling, senior, marketing major; Kelley Lott, junior, accounting major; Luis Macias, senior, accounting major; and Jacob Titzer, junior, marketing major. Co-coaches were Jeanette Maier-Lytle and Jamie Seitz, instructors in accounting. The team was announced late last year.

A diverse group of the best business schools in the world are invited to participate. The USI team was one of only four teams from the United States invited, and the remaining 16 teams were from universities in Canada, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Other universities are noticing the caliber of business case teams from the Romain College. “We were already winners when we arrived as we were one of only 20 teams around the globe receiving a special invite to this inaugural case study competition,” said Maier-Lytle.

The competition was a unique opportunity for students to experience the strategic challenges and decisions that business leaders face in a global marketplace.  The students utilized their analytical and problem-solving skills to communicate strategic recommendations for real-world problems at Exactech and Crom.  The Heavener School of Business collaborated with these sponsoring organizations to develop business cases for the competition.

Alicia Bowling described competing in her last undergraduate case competition as a “bittersweet moment.” She adds, “This process has taught me so much about business and about applying practical solutions in the field. It’s been by far the best thing I got involved in at USI.”
