College of Business Hosts Students from the Shepard Academy

Members of the Economics faculty hosted a group of high school students from the Randall T. Shepard Academy for Law and Social Justice at Harrison High School. The Shepard Academy presents a two-year integrated studies program in law and social justice for Junior and Senior students. The Academy engages Junior and Senior high school students in critical analysis to prepare them for studies relating to law, social justice, American policy and social values while simultaneously earning college credit in public postsecondary universities in Indiana.

Dr. Sudesh Mujumdar gave the students an overview of what USI offers in the field of economics and discussed how economic concepts are applied in their daily lives. Students toured the Judith A. & Robert E. Griffin Experimental Economics Laboratory, and they participated in experimental economics activities, led by Dr. Curtis Price. Students could see how their input in different scenarios can influence and even predict human behavior in certain economic situations.

In preparation for the national stock market competition, the students are returning to USI’s campus in February for a more in-depth discussion about how to analyze stocks and what approaches they might use as they develop their investment portfolios. This event will take place at the Bussing-Koch Stock Market Laboratory. It is free and open to all faculty and students.
