EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana men's tennis senior Ben Boesing is the recipient of the Elite 89TM Award for the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship. Boesing is the first USI student athlete to receive the award.
Boesing, a business administration major who currently carries a 3.89 GPA, was presented with the award during the Division II Men's Tennis Championship banquet Tuesday night in Surprise, Arizona. The native of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, leads the Screaming Eagles with a 24-3 overall singles record, including an 18-match winning streak, and set the all-time USI record for singles wins (82).
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 89 championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling, and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
Boesing and the Eagles begin NCAA Division II Championship action Wednesday at noon (CDT) against the University of California-San Diego at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex, which is the largest tennis complex in the southwest.
