Tips

Administrative Senate's "Nurturing Our Nest" initiative is designed to be a simple, grassroots effort to provide employees some quick tips to help USI recruit and retain our Screagles.

As employees, we all have a responsibility in recruitment and retention. These easy tips are designed to take the tension out of retention.

We hope you will take these ideas and join us in our efforts to attract students to visit our beautiful campus, apply and become a Screagle or support and encourage our current students to continue to grow and develop at USI.

Tip 1

Wear your USI apparel when you are out and about.

(left) Brandi Hess, director of Web Services, wore her USI shirt to her son's basketball game at Perry Central High School. Rosa spotted her and asked her a few questions and plans to schedule a tour this summer after their chat.

Tip 2

If you see someone else wearing USI, reach out and offer a friendly hello and start a conversation.

Ingrid Lindy (pictured right), manager of Human Resource Information Systems, was in Meijer over the weekend and made a new friend with this USI fan.

Tip 3

Go above and beyond!

If a student is lost or at the wrong office, walk them to the appropriate office for assistance. This is a great way to get to know a new student or a continuing student -- and make this process more seamless for everyone involved.

Tip 4

Transferring calls, the right way!

If someone calls your office with a question or concern that falls under another office, provide a "soft hand-off" to the appropriate office by supplying the caller’s name, number and concern when transferring the call. Everyone hates cold calls, and the caller won’t have to explain everything again.

Tip 5

Make a donation to Archibald Eagle’s Food Closet.

Archie’s Food Closet is a service for all members of the USI community to promote the health and wellness of USI students and employees. Items of need (and critical need) are listed on the website. Donations can be dropped off at the RFWC Information Desk. (learn more)

Tip 6

Be part of the solution!

Be part of the solution and not the pollution! Help keep campus beautiful. #NurtureOurNest

Tip 7

Share the good news!

Share USI’s successes on your personal social media accounts. We can help elevate the visibility of student achievements, the great work faculty are doing, and USI happenings among our own connection of friends and family.

Laurie Berry, assistant dean of students, shared and offered congratulations to the USI 2020 Fall Deans list on her Facebook page.

Tip 8

Protect Our Nest – Get the COVID-19 vaccine!

Hoosiers 16 and older are eligible to register for the vaccine. Find a site and get registered.

Students, regardless of international status or state of residence, may get vaccinated free of charge at the USI Vaccination Clinic in the Screaming Eagles Arena next week. Employees may sign up for a USI Vaccination Clinic waitlist if they have not already scheduled an appointment at one of the community locations. Let’s do our part to protect our community and help the University transition back to the USI we all know and love.

Tip 9

Be a Representative!

Nominate yourself or a colleague for service on Administrative Senate, Staff Council and Faculty Senate. Representing your fellow colleagues and serving as their voice is a great way to make USI an even better place to work. Nominations are now being accepted for the next Administrative Senate session starting in July.

Tip 10

Check in on your colleagues/friends/workmates.

Following social distancing guidance or remote work arrangements might feel very isolating for some of us. Check in with your colleagues, friends and workmates, that could be the only friendly face they see or voice they hear during the day! #NurtureOurNest

Tip 11

Surprise and Delight!

Surprise and delight your coworkers and student workers with a tasty treat or note of appreciation for a job well done!

Celebrate our Graduates!

With Commencement this weekend, USI will be celebrating our outstanding students for their achievements. Reach out to welcome USI’s newest alumni and congratulate them on a job well done!

Welcome Back Safely!

With the campus workforce returning next week, welcome everyone back, but remember to do it safely with distancing and masks!
