B/MD Program

Bmd Stats1The purpose of the B/MD Program are:

  1. To increase the number of physicians providing medical services to residents of southwestern and southern Indiana.
  2. To increase opportunities for Indiana residents, especially those in the southwestern and southern portions of the state, to obtain education and training at the Indiana Univeristy School of Medicine.
  3. To enhance the state's efforts in medical education, research, and services focusing on medical issues in Indiana.

Eligibility

Students eligible to apply to the program must be residents of Indiana and meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a current High School Senior at the time of application
  • Cumulative High School GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • A composite core of 1280 or a composite ACT score of 27. No superstores are accepted for either test.

Application Process

BMD-appAdmission to the joint B/MD program is a dual process. Students entering the program will be independently accepted into the undergraduate program at the University of Southern Indiana and the medical degree program at Indiana University School of Medicine.

The following procedure will be followed:

  1. Applications will be sent to the B/MD Advisory Committee at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana; at the same time you must also submit an application for admission to the University of Southern Indiana. You will not be considered for the scholarship without having applied to USI.

  2. The B/MD advisory committee will arrange for qualified candidates to have an interview with members of that committee.

  3. Applications from selected qualified students will then be forwarded to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine.

  4. Final selection and admission to the School of Medicine will be the responsibility of the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine

Neither acceptance into the University of Southern Indiana nor a recommendation to forward the student’s application to the Admissions Committee of Indiana University School of Medicine guarantees acceptance by the School of Medicine. Selected students will have a provisional seat in Indiana University School of Medicine.

The online application will contain the following:

  1. Personal Information, Academic Information and Activities

  2. An essay discussing your interest in medicine and your long term goals in the profession of medicine

  3. Indicating three references (High school Counselor, High School Science Teacher and a Personal Reference from an unrelated individual (minister, employer etc.) who will complete an online evaluation form. The additional comments box is where the reference should paste his or her letter of recommendation. Please DO NOT send any paper copies of the letter of recommendation. These will not be accepted.

  4. You will also be required to bring your seventh semester transcript to the interview in early February.

The application for the Fall 2023 scholarships is now open.  The application deadline for receipt of all materials is November 15th 2022.

Retention and Progression
Once admitted into the program, the student must meet defined criteria to claim the provisional seat reserved in the Indiana University School of Medicine. Those criteria are as follows:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 for the first 31 undergraduate hours and a cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 from 62 hours until Baccalaureate degree is completed.

  • Students must take the MCAT and obtain a score equal to the average of the previous year’s entering class at Indiana University School of Medicine.

  • Completion of required coursework including courses designed specifically for the B/MD program.

  • Completion of the AMCAS application and interview for the Indiana University School of Medicine

Students may major in any field but must complete specified courses for this program and application to medical school. If a student fails to meet the above requirements, they will not be allowed to matriculate directly into the Indiana University School of Medicine. The student may seek admission to the School of Medicine through normal pathways, including the interview.

Scholarship Support
Six students will be selected each year. The University of Southern Indiana will provide full tuition waivers for the undergraduate portion of the program, not to exceed eight academic semesters. (scholarship guidelines) In addition students will be allowed to keep the David L. Rice scholarship.

New for the scholarship in 2019

Each B/MD student will have funding available for undergraduate research projects.

If a student fails to maintain the required GPA, they will be dismissed from the program and their level of scholarship will drop back to the level of the departmental scholarship awarded upon application as a freshman at the University of Southern Indiana (assuming the student meets the minimum grade point average requirements for that scholarship).

Academic Advising

The USI B/MD coordinator will advise the students with aid from the B/MD advisory committee.
