Elissa Tam Excels at USI

Elissa Tam ‘22 of Fishers, Indiana, has achieved great success in her time here at the University of Southern Indiana. Tam, a USI Honors student, received her bachelor’s degree in biology during the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education commencement ceremony this spring. Elissa served as the Student Ambassadors Secretary, the Eagles in Action President and was involved in multiple marketing and communications efforts by the University, including The College Tour and COVID-19 vaccine promotions.  

USI Partners with Joshua Academy for Grant Funded Tutoring Program

Evansville-based Joshua Academy recently received grant funding to enable a tutoring program inside the charter school. The grant required the Joshua Academy to partner with an educational establishment to launch the tutoring program and the University of Southern Indiana was selected.

Teachers Education Department partners with B-Fit

The University of Southern Indiana recently partnered with BFit By Bob’s (formerly Bob’s Gym) to create a set of curricula and educational content for the BFit Kids program, hosted in the gym’s onsite childcare facilities. The partnership between BFit and USI’s Teacher Education Department, located within the University’s Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education, was orchestrated through USI’s Center for Applied Research.

Pott College Student Campus Community Celebrates Students

Pott College Student Campus Community Student Advisory Board celebrated their achievements and presented the Student Excellence Awards in late April. Each student received a stole and cord to represent their membership in the Student Advisory Board, Student Organization Council or as a Pott College Ambassador.

Dr. William Elliott - Chair of Geology and Physics Department

Professor of Geology and Chair of Geology and Physics Department, has recently had writing included as part of a published book, "The Evolution of Paleontological Art," which features the history of art about fossils and the visual conceptualization of their significance started with biblical and mythological depictions, extending to renditions of ancient life and on to a modern understand.

The work includes 29 papers, along with artwork. Elliott's paper is titled "Significance of New Harmony, Indiana, USA, to nineteenth-century paleontological investigations of North America: Progressive education through arts and sciences."

Dr. Christos Deligkaris - Associate Professor of Physics

Associate Professor of Physics, was a co-author on the published article, "Perspectives on How 1.5 Years of the COVID-19 Pandemic Have Impacted Biophysicists at Primarily Undergraduates Institutions," in The Biophysicist journal.

In the article, Deligkaris and his co-authors share highlights from narratives of individual experiences and summarize lessons learned that may be helpful for other Primarily Undergraduates Institutions (PUI) faculty and the broader biophysics community. This is the second time Deligkaris has had a work published in The Biophysicist.

Dr. Glenna Bower - Associate Dean of the Pott College

Professor of Kinesiology and Sport and Associate Dean of the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education, is the co-author on a recently published article, "Is Same-Gender Mentorship Important for Division III Female College Athletes?: An Application of the Mentor Role Theory," in the Journal of Athlete Development and Experience. Bower, along with her co-authors from the University of Louisville and Ball Sate University, discusses the mentoring experiences of NCAA Division III female college athletes based on experiences with both male and female head coaches.

Bower also co-authored "I Was Happy Just to Be Able to Play Baseball," published in March 2022 in NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture. This article not only shares background on the development of women's baseball in Japan, but also discusses the present status and future of women's baseball in Japan by sharing insights from the members of Japan's Women's National Baseball team.
