How to Help Your Student

Unfortunately, some students do experience issues with alcohol or drugs.
As a parent, there are still things you can do.

  • Be aware of the signs of possible alcohol and drug abuse. These include lower grades, not available or reluctant to talk with you, unwilling to talk about activities with friends, trouble with campus authorities, and/or serious mood changes. If your student is under age 21 and is found responsible for a campus alcohol violation, or your student of any age is found responsible for a drug violation, you will receive a letter letting you know. This letter will not include specifics on the incident. Use this as a start to a conversation with your student.
  • If you believe your student is having a problem with alcohol or drugs, help them get appropriate help
  • If your student is concerned about his or her substance use, or that of a friend, encourage them to take the e-chug alcohol assessment and/or speak with a counselor.
  • Continue to stay actively involved in the life of your student.
