Mary Beth Reese is an instructor in USI's Communications Department. Her PRL 362: Writing for Public Relations and PRL 468: Public Relations Campaigns both contain Service Learning components. PRL 362 focuses on techniques of writing news releases, newsletters, brochures, public service announcements, speeches, and other print and broadcast messages that are a part of the public relations profession. PRL 468 is a capstone course using research techniques to identify problems and/or public relations opportunities, to monitor implementation of communications programs, and to evaluate those programs using a planning process to develop public relations objectives, strategies, and tactics designed to meet client/employer needs.
Students in PRL 362 and PRL 468 work with various local and state organizations each semester. In PRL 362, students develop a portfolio of public relations writing assignments including a media pitch, news release, email, memo, newsletter article, brochure, and solicitation letter for a client. In the In PRL 468, students develop a strategic public relations campaign for clients in the community.
