The cup, one of ceramics more iconic images, has been used as a metaphor, a sculptural element, a sculptural foundation and a functional daily piece of dinnerware. Partnering with New Harmony Clay Project, we received seventy-one submissions for our first annual cup exhibition, juried by Paul Wandless, and over 40 additional submissions from invited artists, many including past resident artists of New Harmony Clay Project. Two awards will be given. Best in show will be given the “Overflowing” award of $250. Five honorable mentions will receive the “To the Brim” award of $50 each. Whether you choose to fill your cups with beverages, food, pencils, or ideology, this exhibition will feature over 100 handmade creations from artists across the country. Juror
Paul Andrew Wandless is an artist, author, educator and curator who regularly gives workshops and lectures regarding his art, techniques, and research around the US and Canada. Wandless authored “Image Transfer on Clay,” “500 Prints on Clay, Image & Design Transfer Techniques,” and co-authored “Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques.” He frequently writes for several arts magazines and is featured in the DVD, “Fundamentals of Screen Printing on Clay with Paul Andrew Wandless.” Wandless holds an MFA degree from Arizona State University, an MA degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato and a BFA degree from University of Delaware.
Born in Miami, Florida and raised in Delaware, Paul Andrew Wandless currently lives and has his studio in Chicago, IL. His work utilizes the figure as a point of departure for visual narratives. Ceramic processes and printmaking techniques are combined to create clay prints and clay sculptures. Wandless also works directly in other mediums such as printmaking, stone carving, mold making, metalsmithing, wood carving and painting. His art has been exhibited in museums and galleries since 1995, is collected privately and publicly and is published in 16 books. New Harmony Clay Project is located at the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Ceramic Studio in the lawn adjacent to Philip Johnson’s Roofless Church. NHCP is a rural residency program, supported by the Efroymson Family Fund, Greater Houston Community Foundation, Lenny and Anne Dowhie Trusts, and Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation. All entry fees have been donated to support their mission to foster an environment that supports the investigation of new ideas and work in the ceramic arts. This partnership opens opportunities to welcome and invite new artists to be involved with New Harmony as well as the clay project and gallery.
