Charley’s Aunt may be 112 years old, but she’s still got a great sense of humor, and she’s settling in for a two-week stay at University of Southern Indiana Theatre April 14-25.

Originally produced in London in 1892, Charley’s Aunt is a farce full of the staples of great comedy - mistaken identities, sight gags, pratfalls, and a man in drag.

Written by Brandon Thomas, the classic comedy inspired a movie version with Jack Benny in the 1940s as well as a musical with Ray Bolger in the 1950s.

“Charley’s Aunt is a really funny play, a perfect example of what people love about British comedy,” said John Berst, director and instructor of theatre.

Oxford students Jack, who is hopelessly in love with Kitty, and Charley, who is equally enamored of Amy, are anxious to express the depths of their affection.

As proper young ladies, however, Kitty and Amy cannot see Jack and Charley unless a chaperone is present. Luckily, Charley’s aunt, a rich widow, will soon be in town.

When the young men receive word the aunt has been delayed, Jack and Charley will do anything to keep their date with the girls. The madcap antics that ensue will keep audiences laughing for days.

The cast of USI students features Stephen Risinger as Jack, Josh Buente as Charley, Camille Ruckriegel as Kitty, Kensington Blaylock as Amy, and Angela Tinner as Charley’s aunt, Donna Lucia.

Other cast members include Lauren Tait as Miss Brassett, Jack’s maid; Leo Kempf as Jack and Charley’s friend at Oxford, Lord Fancourt Babberly; Greg Schafer as Jack’s father, Jim Turpen as Kitty’s guardian, and Natalie Singer as Donna Lucia’s niece.

In addition to Berst, the artistic team includes scenic designer Doug Hubbell, associate professor of theatre; lighting designer Richard Kuykendall, assistant professor of theatre; and costume designer Shan Jensen, associate professor of theatre.

Charley’s Aunt will be staged April 14-17 and 21-25 at the USI Theatre, 3001 Igleheart Ave. Curtain is Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $7 for students and seniors 60 and older, and $3 for USI students. For tickets or information, call the USI Theatre box office, 812/422-3970.
